Blackaton Cross or Roman Cross

 

Archaeological Monument: 

 Blackaton Cross or Roman Cross, Wigford down about 200 metres away from Cadover Bridge , Dartmoor, Devon. The Cross stands next to a China Clay track.

The names referring to the Cross :  “Blackaton Cross” suggests the industry of peat farming from the moor for fuel, close to the area of  Blackaton also  using the moor for peat cutting, peat cutting often happend on the moors of the South West, including Bodmin moor and Exmoor. “Roman Cross” is the name that Roman Catholic monks,  may have gave it, as they  passed through the moor on their way to Tavistock and  Plymouth Priory.

 Or had it been a Roman encampment or even direction to a Roman settlement

The head and socket are original.
